Summer 2013 is half over already? What the?

Good morning!

I can't believe that we just wrapped up week 7 of the 2013 season!  Is that even possible?  I'm sure everyone will agree as to how the summer just seems to fly by faster each year.  We have definitely been staying busy here at Eagle Falls Lodge but I took the time to catch up on some emails and gathered some more pictures from guests who have already been up this year and sent us pictures after returning home.  Here is a collection of more photographs from the first 7 weeks -thanks to everyone who remembers to email them to us after returning home!

Mega Shore Lunch!!

Hello all!

I hope everyone is settling back into their routine after the holiday weekend.  

I wanted to share a bunch of pictures with everyone from the incredible shore lunch which took place last week.  We have a father/son duo that have become known around Eagle Falls Lodge for their annual shore lunch extravaganza.  They are nice enough to plan it around our daily chores, so we usually try to make an appearance.  

This year, someone very special got to attend!

Jeff and Andy do all the traditional shore lunch dishes, but also make some delicious extra sides that make it memorable.  These guys plan everything out and do all the cooking.  We just show up and chow down!  It was a beautiful day last week and one of the other groups at the lodge ended up joining in for MEGA SHORE LUNCH!

Red Lake and Parker Lake - Week 6 recap

Good morning everyone!

Wanted to share some nice photos with you from this past week.  We had some nice fish caught yet again, and I think everyone had another great week out at Eagle Falls Lodge!

There were definitely some warmer temperatures to deal with this past week, with most days hitting at least 80 degrees.  With the sun out and low wind it felt very HOT!  Don't worry, everyone still had a blast catching fish.  There were a few rain showers during the afternoons and evenings later in the week which helped to cool things down and stir up the fish.

Celebrating the 4th of July at Eagle Falls Lodge

Happy holiday weekend everyone!

We hope everyone was able to spend the 4th with family and friends - we sure did!  It has started to feel normal to celebrate the 4th of July in Canada, this being the 5th year in a row, but we definitely try to add in some good ol' U.S. of A. flare to stay patriotic.  

I've got to clear the air on one very important 4th of July issue.  Fireworks.  Travis and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum as to how we feel about fireworks.  He LOVES them, lives for them in fact.  Probably starts dreaming about them come Memorial Day.  It was always a big part of Independence Day at the Mack house.  I, on the other hand, am hard pressed to think of anything that seems like a bigger waste of money.  I mean that's what it is right?  You buy a bunch of plastic wrapped brightly colored cardboard and then proceed to set it on fire.  I seriously don't get it.  

I should state that anytime immediately following a fireworks display I usually have a pretty big smile on my face.  Like the one above.  I'm easily entertained, that is for sure.  They are pretty and can be very impressive.  But then I start to worry about everyone's potential hearing loss.  

Alas, Travis is a pretty great guy so I humored him and went all out.  All out for Red Lake, that is.  Where does one acquire fireworks in Red Lake you might ask?  Well, the marina of course.  I got the biggest, most outrageous pack they had.  Appropriately titled the "Dragon Slayer".  You are welcome, baby.  I definitely try to get Travis something he truly enjoys when I can, because he is VERY laid back and doesn't ask for much.  

I think everyone at the lodge was pleased.  

Before the fireworks show got underway, Mary-Jane and I were busy little bees in the kitchen making one heck of a dessert dazzler.  I thought it would be super fun to make a red (which in reality looked pink), white, and blue layered cake.  It turned out pretty well and was SUPER fun to bake.  Everyone gobbled it right up, so I think they liked it!

We also celebrated a birthday yesterday.  Caleb turned 14 and definitely enjoyed celebrating Canada style.  Happy Birthday Caleb!

All that being said, I still miss my annual family reunion in SW Missouri.  We sure hope that everyone and their families had a great time celebrating everything that the 4th of July means to them.  I LOVE SUMMER!

Moose sighting just between Vermillion Bay and Red Lake

Good morning all!

These pictures come from Ethan in Missouri and were taken on his way up to Eagle Falls Lodge last month.  We wanted to share these incredible pictures with you guys and give a quick reminder about making sure you are on the lookout for moose crossing the road as you are driving in Canada.  

If you have made the trip up before you have probably seen a sign similar to the one below, which warns of moose crossing the road.  They tend to be nocturnal and it can be dangerous when traveling at night.

Doesn't the picture above almost look photoshopped?   Absolutely incredible!  

They are amazing creatures, both on land and in water.  

Moose are the largest of the deer species and can weigh up to 1,800 pounds (820 kg).  Because of their giant antlers and long faces they prefer browsing in higher grasses because lowering their head can be difficult.  I wonder if they are able to give each other neck rubs?  Despite their large stature they are incredible swimmers and can swim several miles at a time and can stay completely submerged for 30 seconds or more. 

We have seen several from the camp already this year, including some calfs.  Female moose give birth in the spring to calves weighing about 30 lbs - can you imagine?  Just five days after birth the calves have grown enough to outrun a person!

I think moose are my favorite of the wildlife creatures we get to see up here in Canada each summer.  What about you?
